I'm just saying....

Dallas Cowboys v Philadelphia Eagles

A weekly collection of random thoughts and observations for you to consider.

  • Once again, the NFL seems to have its priorities mixed up and do not appear to be Eagles fans. While they forego suspensions on players testing positive for steroids, they decide to clamp down hard on the Eagles Joselio Hanson for taking a weight loss pill. And, last week they penalized the Eagles for a 1 second Captain Morgan pose after a touchdown. Perhaps the NFL front office are scotch drinkers and like players with a little bit of meat on them?
  • Considering that the TV networks are continually looking to find new sources of revenue, Jorge Posada presented an excellent new opportunity in the World Series. In Game 2 of the World Series, Posada called 28 timeouts to visit the mound. Could the "Avodart or Directv Pitching Conference Moment" be in the not too distant future?
  • Since things haven't seemed to take a turn for the better in Washington, maybe Sherman Lewis will become available for a consulting gig with Philadelphia? Last week's game against Dallas suggested that a "Time Management" consultant might be in order for the Eagles.
  • Rumor has it that the Patriots are looking to add the Wildcat formation to their offense. If only they could have made that decision before the trade deadline....
  • "LeBron" has spoken. He is calling for the league to retire #23 in honor of "Michael" rationalizing that if he is not going to wear the number, then surely nobody else should. Lets hope the NBA does not further inflate these two third person, first name-only egos by complying with LeBron's decree.
  • Wade Phillips seems to over celebrate a little as if he knows he is on borrowed time. I was waiting for him to dump Gatorade on his players after the Eagles failed to convert a 4th and inches.
  • And, speaking of 4th and inches, it sure would help if NFL referees actually spotted the ball in the appropriate place and then used the same video that was shown to all television viewers to get the call right after a challenge.

I'm just saying.....

Texas Rangers v San Francisco Giants
  • I guess its good to be affectionately known as the "Panda", but I would think a conditioning program for Pablo Sandoval might be preferred over maintaining the shape of a cuddly mascot.
  • There are 9 new head coaches in the NFL with no previous head coaching experience. I can't say that others won't do well (although Josh McDaniels and Raheem Morris aren't looking like future icons at this point), but my money is on Steve Spagnuolo and Rex Ryan to have success in the lead role.
  • It would be criminal if Jimmy Rollins does not win another Gold Glove award this year.
  • It might not be criminal, but at least unjust, if Shane Victorino does not capture his 2nd consecutive gold glove.
  • And, Jayson Werth has a shot the way he stylistically runs down balls and guns runners out on the base paths (plus, his attention getting offensive output doesn't hurt.) He would have my vote if anyone asked.
  • Speaking of Werth, what's up with the scoreboard graphic showing Jayson spitting out a frog?
  • Could Andy Roddick parlay his experience from this year's Wimbeldon final into his second US Open championship?
  • When the checker asks you at the supermarket whether you want paper or plastic, aren't you just picking your poison? And, which one is more politically correct, anyway?
  • Now that Jonathan Papelbon's wallet is $5,000 lighter for taking too long to deliver his first pitch in a couple games, perhaps he should bag the "Riverdance" steps on the way in from the bullpen?
  • I didn't spot them in the stands on Wednesday night at Citizen's Bank Park, but Grandpa, Lilly and Eddie must have been pleased.

I'm Just Saying......

A weekly collection of random thoughts and observations for you to consider.

  • How good is your team when Cole Hamels is currently your 4th best starting pitcher?
  • Odds are that Brett Favre was that kid riding his bike with no hands saying "Hey, look at me!"
  • Considering the current medical state of the Eagles offensive line, a better use for the recently committed $7 million in payroll might be to add John Runyan.
  • Jayson Werth and Ryan Howard are officially "En Fuego" after each recording multiple hits and banging long home runs to centerfield last night. (See "Things We're Tracking" on the left for others.)
  • The Phillies offense is starting to look like it deserves a moniker similar to "The Lumber Company" or "Big Red Machine" nicknames from the 70's.
  • Was it just me, or did Eldra Buckley look a little like Marion Barber running that screen play?
  • Last night's Donovan McNabb to DeSean Jackson 39 yard touchdown pass was perfectly executed and could be a preview of the success they will have when the games count.
  • Its a little early to predict doom and gloom for the Birds' upcoming season based on their first two pre-season games.
  • Joe Blanton showed mental toughness by not unraveling after a misplayed pop fly double and a hurdling, jagged bat barrel helped the Diamondbacks plate two runs in the 4th.
  • Brad Lidge is throwing harder this year, didn't exactly paint the corners last year, and the last season he struggled so mightily he later discovered that he was tipping his pitches. I'm just saying....it would be worth a closer look by Rich Dubee.
